Louisiana Homeowners Need Flood Insurance

The Louisiana coastline is one of the nation’s most vulnerable to flooding. The state’s close proximity to the Mississippi River and the Gulf of Mexico, as well as the many rivers, streams and bayous throughout the state leave many residents at a high risk for flood. While Hurricane Katrina is still fresh in our minds nearly ten years later, Louisiana residents face the risk of flooding from more than just hurricanes. In recent history, we’ve seen historic flooding from excessive rainfall and other severe storms.

Fifteen Louisiana parishes have areas that are designated high-risk flood zones, with the overwhelming majority of the state’s flood insurance claims coming from these 15 parishes. Those who live in a high-risk area, or a Special Flood Hazard Area, are required to have flood insurance. In addition, we recommend flood insurance to all Louisiana residents.

Flood insurance is available through the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). You can purchase NFIP flood insurance through your insurance agent, and you can get coverage for both your building property and your belongings. Flood Insurance is available to Louisiana homeowners, renters, condo owners and business owners.

The NFIP also offers tips on how to reduce your losses and stay safe during a flood:

  • Learn your flood risk by reviewing the flood risk maps at FloodSmart.gov. We can also help you determine the flood risk of your property.
  • Know in advance what your plan for evacuation will be. Plan an evacuation route and make sure someone outside of the flood zone knows where you will be and how to contact you.
  • Store your valuables where they can’t get damaged, and take your most important papers and valuable with you if you evacuate.
  • Conduct a thorough home inventory. This will help you file an insurance claim.
  • Build an emergency supply kit that includes food, water, first aid supplies, medications and a battery-operated radio.
  • Learn about ways to lower your risk of sewer backup, electrical problems, and other flood-related damages.
  • Get flood insurance. In Louisiana, this is the best way to guarantee that you will be financially protected in the event of a flood.
