When to Call Your Insurance Agent

You may be surprised to learn about how many seemingly minor changes you make in your life can have an impact on the insurance coverage you have or need. When you make certain changes to your lifestyle, your household, your finances or other areas of your life, you need to let us know so we can evaluate the impact on your insurance coverage and make sure that you are neither under- nor over-insured.

Consider the following ten reasons you need to call us:

  1. Changes in home occupancy. Your home insurance assumes that you occupy the home you own. If you don’t, you need to tell us. Your policy will need to be rewritten or adjusted to reflect occupancy changes.
  2. Working from home. Business property and liability coverage is typically excluded from or severely limited by homeowners insurance. If you work from home or start a home-based business, you probably need to make changes to your policy or purchase additional coverage. Working from home can also have an impact on your car insurance if the number of miles you drive regularly changes significantly.
  3. Discount eligibility. All kinds of changes in your household can make you eligible for new or different discounts on your home and auto insurance.
  4. Changes in cohabitation. If who lives with you or in your home changes, you might need to make changes to your homeowners insurance. If someone lives in your home but is not a named insured on your homeowners policy, that person might not have personal property or liability coverage in the event of a covered loss. In addition, household changes can also impact your auto insurance rates.
  5. Car accidents. Contact us immediately if you are involved in any type of a car accident.
  6. International travel. If you plan to drive your car outside of the United States, contact us to discuss coverage options for your own vehicle or rental cars.
  7. New valuable property. Jewelry, furs, guns, silverware, gold, antiques and other unique or high value items require special personal property coverage. If you purchase any new items, or the value of any of your existing items changes significantly, tell us about it.
  8. Association living. If your condo association makes changes to its association master policy, you may need to change your own insurance policy.
  9. Remodeling and home improvement. Significant changes in your home will likely require a change to your dwelling coverage limit.
  10. Purchase of a new home or property. Coverage for vacation homes, cabins, rental properties, farm properties, hunting land and leased property could be specifically limited or excluded from a homeowners policy. You must report changes to additional properties or purchases of new properties to us immediately.

Other important reasons to call us include:

  • Paying off your home or car loan
  • Hiring domestic workers (e.g., nurses, assistants, gardeners, caretakers, maids and childcare workers)
  • Purchase of or change to a moped, snowmobile, ATV, golf cart, riding mower or other motorized vehicle
  • You have a company car

Remember that it is important to always keep us informed when you make major changes to the physical structure of your home, your living arrangements or your finances. In addition, purchases of property or highly valuable items are also a reason to call us. If you are unsure if something will impact your insurance coverage, do not hesitate to call. We are always available to give advice and lend a hand.
